Congratulations to Jinghan Wu on her outstanding junior recital performance. Music by Linghai Li, Mozart, and Chopin got powerful, sensitive, and dynamic readings. Her Chopin F-sharp minor Polonaise was especially strong. The Li was sparkling and colorful - the Mozart charming. Congratulations Jinghan!

The Harvey Scholl Prize in Piano was established in 2007 to recognize the artistry and dedicated teaching and service of Dr. Harvey Scholl, Professor of Piano at Jacksonville University in the 1960s and 1970s. Dr. Scholl was a beloved mentor and leader - and he worked hard to bring out the best in his students, always.
The Harvey Scholl Prize is intended to honor that student who has exhibited outstand progress during the academic year, and to honor that student's leadership qualities, and dedication to the art of playing the piano.
We don't get to define our awards during the JU College of Fine Arts Convocation like we used to do - but I wanted this year's recipient to know about Dr. Scholl and to know why he won his much-deserved award.
The 2012 Harvey Scholl Prize in Piano is awarded to Music Education Major, John Shannon, from Watertown, Connecticut.
Congratulations, John! You are going to inspire many young people with your love of music! Music's future couldn't be in more capable hands.

Dear readers,
I was so impressed Saturday night during my senior piano student's (Alfred Meneses) Senior Recital. He worked so hard to prepare, rehearse, and create his program and his performance was STUNNING. Such mature playing, and so musically sensitive.
I was really touched by his comments... Alfred, if you are reading this, I want you to know that the honor has been ALL MINE. What a privilege to watch you grow and mature - and to hear you play with conviction and profound emotional connection and musicianship.
Wishing you all the best for your bright future!
And thank you for four amazing years of music-making.
Your grateful teacher,
Dr. W.

BIG SHOUT OUT to my piano students (Katherine, Austin, Alfred, Tyler, John, Melony, Grace) for AWESOME lessons this week! You guys are just improving fast and becoming sensitive, artistic musicians. So proud of you guys.
Now a few others (you know who you are) ... *insert sound of cracking whip here* ... looking forward to seeing you this week (ahem).

Congratulations to Michael Mastronicola on an outstanding performance Friday evening (August 19) at The Friday Musicale. He gave a masterful reading of Aaron Copland's powerful Piano Sonata, and energetic performances of music by Ginastera an Villa Lobos. Bobb Robinson (baritone) was stirring in two song suites by Timothy Snyder (Three Songs after Schumann, and Three Robert Frost Songs). Robinson's velvety voice was the perfect vehicle for these rich and noble songs. The Saint-Saens piano duo (with Greg Spiess) was fun, too!
After knowing Michael for just a year, I am impressed by his musicianship and technical mastery - and he's just an awfully nice guy. Our students love him at JU and he's really worked his way into the musical community.
Bravo! to Michael. Looking forward to hearing him again.
Bravo

Very special SHOUT-OUT to my graduating senior piano student, Ben Clark, who graduated from The Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. What an outstanding year Mr. Clark enjoyed. He was the FSMTA District IV Senior Concerto Competition Winner in March. Also in March he was finalist in the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition. In the fall he will attend The Florida State University (his teacher's ... and MY teacher's Alma Mater!) majoring in Business Finance and minoring in Music!
